Work-Life Balance Week: Healthy Workers Are Productive Workers, So Practice Self-Care

We kick off 3Q’s work-life balance series with a post from Director of People and Culture Natalie Pejooh, who takes on the issue of self-care at work.

There seems to be a misconception that self-care should be reserved for your personal life, but the reality is you can and you should find ways to incorporate it into your work hours too. Taking better care of yourself will only help you be more productive in the long run – which is what you’re trying to do in the first place.

When we are busy or feeling stressed, self-care is typically one of the first things we sacrifice. We all have those moments where we find it easier to just put self-care on the back burner. It can feel unattainable, especially when we have deadlines to think about, but the point is to not feel like you’re just adding on to a list of tasks – it should feel easy and helpful.

Self-care can mean so many different things; it’s not one-size-fits-all. Here are some tips to help inspire and motivate you to consider what self-care looks like for you.

Start your workday with something that makes you happy

Before you open your laptop and dive into work, consider a morning ritual that you can look forward to. Maybe it’s taking a walk to the coffee shop, making some breakfast in the kitchen, or catching up with your coworker. Even if it’s just 10 minutes, allow yourself some “me” time to get ready for the day.

Change up your lunch routine

There are so many different ways that this can be done. For starters, try eating lunch away from your desk. You’re ensuring that you actually take a break from working and give your eyes some rest from staring at a computer. You can also change up the scenery by finding somewhere new to grab food or somewhere new to eat. Lunch doesn’t need to be reserved just for eating; do what feels right to you like taking a walk, attending a work-out class, or reading a book… just don’t forget to eat!

Organize and personalize your workspace

Think about how much more productive and better you feel when you’re in a clean and organized space. Every so often, set aside some time to clean up and organize your desk. Also consider adding some personal touches that make you happy like photos, art, and plants!

Make a playlist

Make a playlist that motivates you, makes you happy, or helps you concentrate. And don’t forget to share music with your co-workers – you might find something new in the process, which is always a treat.

Make moves

We sit at our desks far too much! Get up from your desk more often, take stretch breaks, and walk around the office. This is especially helpful when you’re having a hard time finishing a task. Get some movement in to help you gain clarity! Set up a timer or download an app if you need a helpful reminder.

These suggestions may feel counter-intuitive; they’re cutting into your precious non-meeting time, right? But ultimately, they’ll help you clear your head and be more productive over the course of your day.
