New-Hire Onboarding in the Social Distancing Age: Tips for Online Teaching

The COVID-19 era of social distancing is presenting unique challenges for almost every company, including how to work remotely with new hires to make them feel integrated, comfortable, and prepared to contribute in their roles. The 3Q Training team is providing a blog series to help organizations tackle the challenge.
A good trainer has an acute awareness about what students are thinking, how they understand the topic that we’re covering, and how to adjust so that everyone’s taking in as much of the material as possible.

Of course, that’s much easier in person than online, but there are a few things you can do to tip the scales back in your direction.

Get on video and read their non-verbal communication

This one’s pretty self-explanatory. Getting a visual gives you clues from body language and facial expressions and helps you drive the conversation accordingly.

Decrease demonstrations and have them drive more

  1. Have them complete the process that you’re teaching while you guide them
  2. Have them contemplate potential mistakes that they should look out for
  3. Emphasize the consequences of common mistakes as well as best practices

Provide additional feedback

New hires are hungry for feedback, and for good reason. They’re quickly learning everything from how to complete tasks to what kind of expectations their new team has. Your goal as a manager or trainer is to create more conversations with additional teachable moments.

  1. Start each session with a question from a previous session
  2. Ask questions that demonstrate the connection between material that you previously went over and what you’re going over now
  3. Turn responses into teachable moments with corrections or elaboration
  4. Always have them repeat what they just learned

More than ever, it’s important to go beyond just covering the materials. Make sure you’re reading and reacting to the needs of your new hires to help them learn, and make them an active participant to increase their investment in the process.
