Our Humans of 3Q series continues this week with Zenia Johnson, Senior Social Account Manager, out of our Chicago office! Get to know Zenia below:

Explain your role at 3Q in 3 sentences or fewer:

I’m a Senior Account Manager on the Social Team. I basically spend my time either in an Excel spreadsheet or Facebook, developing strategies for campaigns, executing campaigns, or looking for optimization insights from existing campaigns.

What’s one marketing lesson you wished you had learned earlier?

That the best digital strategies don’t pit one channel against another. In the best scenarios, they all work together so that learnings and insights are shared – I’ve been in situations at previous agencies where I’ve felt like I was in competition with the other media channels, and that really prevents marketers from getting a holistic view of client performance.

What sets 3Q apart from other agencies in the industry?

3Q is an incredibly inclusive digital agency. Leadership doesn’t just talk about how our company can help to foster a more diverse and inclusive community, but they invest in programs, support internal committees, and give employees the resources and time to participate in volunteer opportunities. I find this to be a huge differentiator from not only other agencies where (in my personal experience) insensitivity to the importance of diversity and inclusivity is the norm.

Teamwork makes the dream work

What’s something that makes your office cooler than the other 3Q offices?

This is cliche, but the people! Being in Chicago, our office is just full of Midwestern charm – any one of us in the office are liable to welcome you warmly, hit you with some witty snark, and then invite you out for deep-dish all in the same 5-minute conversation!

When coworkers from other offices come to visit, what’s one thing they absolutely have to do in your city?

That absolutely depends on the weather, but fan favorites are Cubs games, deep-dish pizza, and grabbing some Harold’s chicken with mild sauce (because of the weather, many of our activities are centered around food).

What 3Q initiative outside of your job description are you most proud of being a part of?

Doing my part to help create a more diverse marketing/tech industry is important to me personally, so I’m very proud to participate in our Diversity Committee. In addition to that, in the Chicago office we regularly volunteer with an organization that provides after-school resources to kids in low-income areas – so far that’s been the most rewarding experience to participate in because the kids are incredibly smart and SO unexpectedly funny.

Tell us about your morale associate (pet: if you have one)

Technically I only have one fur baby to my name, and he’s a 12-pound terrier rescue named Beau. I say technically because my mom works 5 minutes from my house, and every morning she drops off her dog (a Poodle/Bichon named Dexter), so our boys have an 8-hour playdate everyday. I consider Dexter to be our shared furbaby lol.

Beau and Dexter
What’s been the coolest thing you’ve done with your unlimited PTO?

So far I’ve been able to get in two trips to New Orleans (my absolute FAVORITE city), but my husband and I are traveling with our best friends to the south of France in October. I can’t wait!

Have you participated in 3Q3%? If so, what’s been your favorite experience?

I mentioned this experience earlier, but volunteering with the Chicago Youth Center has turned out to be a regular activity for the Chicago office. That organization is doing a lot to impact the community, and I love that we’re able to volunteer with such an outstanding non-profit.

How do you spend your free time?

Outside of cooking and eating (if I have a third career, it’ll be as a chef), I’m an avid reader – I can’t get enough of books! In fact, one of my New Year’s resolutions was to put an end to the habit of reading multiple books at one time to increase speed and comprehension, but I can’t help it – in the last two weeks, I’ve seen two books that excited the he** out of me (Andrew Gross’ “The One Man” and Yaa Gyasi’s “Homegoing”) so I’m currently juggling 5 different titles. There’s always next year, right?

Here’s a video of me prepping some fresh octopus for the grill last year. It was DELICIOUS:

What do you think has been the most interesting change in the marketing industry or in your channel this year?

Without a doubt, the changes that we’ve seen and are still continuing to see because of the Cambridge Analytica scandal. Some of these changes have been incredibly impactful to campaign processes and measurement, but that’s nothing new – the social media landscape has been constantly evolving since its inception. I’m hopeful that these changes will help businesses and marketers practice their craft more ethically and responsibly.

If you could choose any TV show or movie world to live in, what would it be?

After thinking through this question, I think I’ll stick to my current reality – all of my current favorites are either super dark and semi-dystopian (The Handmaid’s Tale), super wacky (The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt) or just plain old terrifying (The Terror)!

If you could switch lives with someone for a day, who would it be and why?

My pick for a day would be Maxine Waters – she’s such a badass and takes no mess from anyone. I’d love to be able to exist with her level of self-confidence.

What’s your favorite TED talk?

What’s your favorite gif?

I’m very competitive, so whenever I win at something (particularly an argument, whether they be professional or personal), this gif is on a loop in my head. ?
