Our Humans of 3Q series continues this week with Mike Thomas, Associate Director of Mobile Strategy, out of our San Diego office! Get to know Mike below:

Explain your role at 3Q in 3 sentences or fewer:

I can do it in three words: “Acquire, retain, repeat.” But to provide a little more context, with the help of my team, I work closely with 3Q’s coolest app clients. Through our expertise in mobile media buying, mobile strategy, and mobile technologies, we focus on all things mobile… because mobile is so hot right now.

The mobile team does Paris

The Mobile team does Seattle

What is one marketing lesson you wish you had learned earlier?

Not necessarily a marketing lesson but rather a life lesson… everyone in their career accidentally uses “CC” instead of “BCC” at least once. You get one pass.

Tell us about your morale associate (pet):

I thought you’d never ask…Obi is a Bernese Mountain dog and a Poodle mix. He’s just over a year old and already runs point at our house. He does everything in his power to make sure you don’t get out of bed. He enjoys cuddling, stealing shoes, and letting the entire neighborhood know he’s home. He’s afraid of bubbles, feathers, and not being everyone’s best friend.

When coworkers from other offices come to visit, what’s one thing they absolutely have to do in your city?

I would suggest jumping in the ocean and then chasing your dip with some beachfront fish tacos at sunset. Your salty lips from the swim will pair well with a Pacifico and lime. San Diego also brews an absurd amount of IPAs in case you want something with a bit more bite.

What’s something that makes your office cooler than the other 3Q offices?

Centrally located in the heart of the historic Gaslamp Quarter, we’re surrounded by some beautiful Victorian, Italian Renaissance, and Spanish Revival architecture, in juxtaposition with some classy rooftop bars, including a fine tiki establishment with Pina Coladas on tap. History with scurvy-preventing grog in the same place — I’m content!

What’s been the coolest thing you’ve done with your unlimited PTO?

My wife and I went to Mexico City and Tulum earlier this year. Both spots were beautiful and really helped boost my Instagram following. I’m thinking a couple of trips a year and I’ll be an influencer in no time. Delicious food and stunning beaches make for great clickbait. I guess I’ll make do in San Diego in the interim.

What 3Q initiative outside of your job description are you most proud of being a part of?

Our San Diego 3% team does a great job setting up a variety of volunteer events year-round. It’s always a great time giving back and bonding with the team.

What sets 3Q apart from other agencies in the industry?

Aside from all the great perks, trendy office spaces, and room for career growth, the people make 3Q an exciting and rewarding place to work. Our high retention rate is proof that 3Q knows how to “acquire, retain, and repeat.”

Work hard, play hard, repeat
How do you spend your free time?

A majority of my free time this year has been spent landscaping my backyard. After endless weekends of our sweat, blood, tears, back pain, beer, and country music, HGTV’s Yard Crashers would be proud. When I’m not pulling weeds, I enjoy getting outside and staying active. With Mexico so close, we’ll dine out in Tijuana, explore the wine region of Valle de Guadalupe, or hang out on the beaches of Baja.

Suburban Life
What do you think has been the most interesting change in the marketing industry this year?

For years, there are have been so many ad networks out there who have been surviving off easy aggregation and taking a steep margin without providing that much additional value. With more marketers asking detailed questions and listing out their requirements, like placement transparency (shocking!), plus more advanced reporting signals (data that correlates to fraud), these networks are struggling to prove their worth. This evolution is giving even more power to the duopoly, plus a handful of networks who actually have a strong offering.

If you could choose any TV show or movie world to live in, what would it be?

I would gladly live in New York City, circa Flight of the Conchords. I can’t believe Mel is their only fan. She would have some stiff competition if I was around. I would be present for every meeting with Murray.

Have you participated in 3Q3%? If so, what’s been your favorite experience?

I really enjoyed putting my cooking skills to the test last Thanksgiving by heating up some gravy and stirring the mashed potatoes. The holidays are an especially great time to give back, so I’m glad 3Q could help provide a tasty Thanksgiving meal to those in need.

Filming Master Chef
What is the last thing you read?

While I do enjoy a good book, the last thing I read was actually a cookbook by Javier Plascencia called “The Soul of Baja.” I enjoy cooking so I have a weird obsession with collecting cookbooks from various chefs. If you have the same problem, Javier’s cookbook offers a variety of recipes (obvi) from his different restaurants, including tacos with cow udders and octopus tostadas.

What’s your next adventure?

I recently bought a boat as an investment opportunity, and since then I’ve spent most of my weekends paying mechanics to fix it. We just installed colorful mermaid curtains in the cabin, so we’re looking forward to spending a night onboard. It’s complete with a barbeque, bait tank, cleaning table, and dock lines, so we’ll essentially be glamping, no yurt required.
