Our Humans of 3Q series continues this week with Alexandra Shanahan, Account Director, out of our Chicago office! Get to know Alexandra below:
Explain your role at 3Q in 3 sentences or fewer:
I like to say I spend most of my time pestering people on Slack – but really, I spend about 40% of my time driving strategy and project-managing my accounts, 20% communicating with clients, and 40% on team management, training, and process improvements. I lead a fantastic team based in Chicago and San Francisco.
What’s one marketing lesson you wished you had learned earlier?
Every client is a unique opportunity – don’t assume you know everything and get ready to test and challenge your perceptions of best practices. They’re not universal!
What sets 3Q apart from other agencies in the industry?
There’s a lot of opportunity to step up and take more responsibility and grow – it’s not limited by how long you’ve worked here or what your job title is. If you have great ideas and take initiative, it will be noticed, and you’ll progress quickly.
What’s something that makes your office cooler than the other 3Q offices?
Our proximity to the lake, Millennium Park, and the Art Institute. After work you can get your culture on at concerts in the park or at the museum on Thursdays.
When coworkers from other offices come to visit, what’s one thing they absolutely have to do in your city?
I would recommend an architecture tour – it’s not too cheesy, you’ll learn something, and you can spend time on a boat! Heading to the Green City Market in Lincoln Park and taking a walk through the nature preserve is also nice.
What 3Q initiative outside of your job description are you most proud of being a part of?
I like collaborating with the training team – I’ve participated in presentation skills training, and I’m also working on a training for Search Ads 360 (aka DoubleClick Search).
Tell us about your morale associate (pet: if you have one)
My building does not allow pets, sadly – but I’m always checking in on my family pet, Lucy!
What’s been the coolest thing you’ve done with your unlimited PTO?
Climbing a mountain in Switzerland! Ok, we took a gondola.
Have you participated in 3Q 3%? If so, what’s been your favorite experience?
Late last year we volunteered at Chicago Youth Center, and I spent time decorating their gym for Christmas and worked on arts & crafts with the kids.
How do you spend your free time?
I usually relax by reading and going on nice long walks to explore new neighborhoods.
What do you think has been the most interesting change in the marketing industry or in your channel this year?
Definitely GDPR – it’s something every advertiser has had to work through and tackle with a legal solution that minimizes impact on performance.
If you could choose any TV show or movie world to live in, what would it be?
I’ve recently started watching (and gotten into) Star Trek – live long and prosper!
If you were given an unlimited amount of money to invest into one upcoming or exciting marketing technology, what would it be?
CRO – I’m always impressed with the lifts in performance an ongoing testing plan can drive. Ideally, each plan would include UX research, exit polling and user testing.
