Humans of 3Q: Meet Carolanne Hornung

Our Humans of 3Q series continues this week with Carolanne Hornung, Paid Social Account Manager, out of Chicago, IL! Get to know Carolanne below:

Explain your role at 3Q in 3 sentences or fewer:

If you ask my parents, they’ll say “she sits on Facebook all day.” They’re technically not wrong – I’m a Paid Social Account Manager. I execute, measure, optimize, and strategize the paid social campaigns of our clients and strive to exceed expectations using data as my friend.

What’s one marketing lesson you wished you had learned earlier?

Your audience most likely has a short attention span. You’ve got 5-8 seconds to grab your audience’s attention and keep them engaged. It’s part of why you’re seeing a shift from static images to content that’s more engaging, like carousels and videos.

What sets 3Q apart from other agencies in the industry?

The culture. When transitioning from working at a startup to working at an agency, I was afraid I would hate it. As cliche as it sounds, 3Q does an amazing job at hiring people who fit with the culture and our core values. At 3Q you’ll find employees who truly care about the accounts they’re managing like they’re running a small business, treat everyone like a client, and people who go above and beyond what is expected (see 3Q3%, below).

What’s something that makes your office cooler than the other 3Q offices?

The air conditioning. No, seriously. The Chicago office is so cold we all have 3Q-branded blankets. Aside from the A/C, our office is great because of the teammates put up with my awful jokes and very questionable Sonos choices day-in and day-out. The fridge stocked with Chicago craft beers is pretty nice, too.

When coworkers from other offices come to visit, what’s one thing they absolutely have to do in your city?

Eat at Molly’s Cupcakes! My favorite is the Cookie Monster. After you’re done with Molly’s, head to Headquarters – it’s a beercade with an amazing selection.

Tell us about your morale associate (pet: if you have one).

I don’t know where to start. We have 4 step-chickens (not pictured: Pogo, who isn’t very photogenic), one step-dog (Pepper), two dogs (Andi and Ricky), one house cat (Señor), and a barn cat (Jake). Currently in the works: more cats and possibly alpaca?

What’s been the coolest thing you’ve done with your unlimited PTO?

Went to Colorado for the first time! I absolutely love hiking and the outdoors. One of my favorite hikes was to Emerald Lake, where we befriended some overly-friendly chipmunks, and one of my favorite drives was on Trail Ridge Road where the highest elevation is 12,183‘. It was abnormally foggy and rainy while we were there, so we made the best out of some of the obstructed-view mountain drives by listening to every Zelda soundtrack we could because why not?

Have you participated in 3Q 3%? If so, what’s been your favorite experience?

I LOVE 3Q 3%! My absolute favorite experience (that I believe truly shows how amazing 3Qers are) was the 2017 holiday season. Earlier in the year, the Chicago office had collected donations for two families who lost everything in the hurricanes. Come the 2017 holidays, a lot of the families couldn’t afford gifts for their kids and were just asking strangers to send Christmas cards. We ended up with the names of 26 kids with the initial intention of sending them cards. Instead, 3Qers from every office came together to make sure every child had a card and a gift. It was amazing that the response was “this is wonderful, but we can absolutely do more.”

How do you spend your free time?

I recently purchased my first home with my fiancé, so a lot of my free time has been spent doing renovations and wondering why people find this fun. Outside of home renovations, I enjoy reading, weightlifting, baking, video games, and volunteering. During the season, you can usually find me in the front row of S8 chanting at Fire games.

What do you think has been the most interesting change in the marketing industry or in your channel this year?

Social media and government affairs. Whether it’s your local government or international issues, anything and everything can be found and discussed on social media. The crackdown on bots is also a curious issue that’s interesting to watch platforms acknowledge and tackle.

What is your next adventure?

Getting married and taking a honeymoon to Ireland in the fall! I haven’t traveled to Ireland before but would love suggestions of “must do’s”!

If you could choose any TV show or movie world to live in, what would it be?

Definitely the Shire, particularly Hobbiton. People always poke fun at my height (4’11”) and call me a hobbit, but joke’s on them – hobbits really aren’t taller than 4 feet.
