Just hours after Facebook’s Q4 earnings were released, Facebook introduced Paper, a new app that works to combine your interests with your News Feed. The app allows users to customize what sections they see. The first section is your News Feed. From there you can view friend’s updates, pictures, and more. The other sections are added by the user. Facebook has announced that there will be more than a dozen interest categories available to choose from.
Paper was clearly built with smartphones in mind. All images released of the images released this far have featured the app on an iPhone. This shouldn’t come as a surprise: during yesterday’s earnings, Facebook revealed that mobile revenue surpassed desktop revenue for the first time. Clearly, Facebook is trying to capitalize on this milestone achievement for mobile.
It is difficult to critique the app without having used it myself, but from the announcement and the graphics released the app is very image-friendly. Again, it is a well-known fact that posts with photos almost always perform better than those without images. Paper is a synergy of what has worked on Facebook and I expect great things to come from it!
