3Q's SEO Team Takes the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator Test

Published: April 17, 2015

The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) is a way to understand how people perceive their world, find motivation, and make decisions.

It categorizes people’s tendencies across 4 preferences:

Introverted (I) / Extraverted (E): Does someone feel energized by being around others, or by being alone?

Intuitive (N) / Observant (S): When taking in new information, does someone prefer to focus on its contents or its meaning?

Thinking (T) / Feeling (F): Does someone make decision based on logical or emotional import?

Judging (J) / Perceiving (P): When making decisions, does someone prefer to have things set in stone, or stay open to new options?

It’s important to note that one’s preference is just that — the mode they tend towards, rather than their ability or strength. Someone could, for example, tend towards T-based decisions but be deeply empathetic and take others’ feelings into consideration when making a decision.

Our SEO team has grown and changed recently, and we decided to take the test to better understand our strengths as individuals and as a team. Well, that and our inability to shy away from an interesting research project.

You can find the test we took here: http://www.16personalities.com/free-personality-test

I present to you… the SEO team!

Overall Distribution by Trait

I’d say the team is fairly balanced — we’re not so incredibly heavy in one direction or another on any trait that we lose perspective. While there are some strong preferences along most traits (dots to the far left or right of the middle quartiles), these strong preferences are typically mirrored along the same trait divide.

We’re fairly tightly focused on a slight preference for N, T, and J, as evidenced by the darker blue boxes.

Distribution by Role

Okay, obviously take this with a grain of salt as it’s about 3 people per role, but some interesting trends:

– Heavier leaning towards extraversion for Directors while Managers/Analysts are more introverted (and more introverted than Directors are extraverted)

– Directors tend towards S while Managers/Analysts tend towards N, though this trait division has the largest range

– Preference among directors for J, which, to me, makes sense given that these people are more often the decision makers

Distribution vs Population at Large
I’m really intrigued by the strong representation of Ns (intuitive) we have on the team — definitely does not match typical distributions of type.

Individual Traits by Person
Color range is orange->blue, so dark orange is strong I while dark blue is strong E.

Have you taken the Myers-Briggs test with your team? If not, it may be a good exercise to help determine the strengths of the individual members of your team!
