3Q3% Update: Volunteering with the Charlottesville and San Mateo Offices

Published: November 7, 2018

This week we’re checking in with each of our offices to get the latest on their 3Q3% activities. 3Q3% is our company’s initiative to encourage our employees to spend at least 3% of their time giving back to their local communities. Each office has a dedicated 3Q3% organizer who plans group volunteering opportunities throughout the year. Today: Charlottesville and San Mateo!

The Charlottesville office recently had an entire day of 3Q3%! We had spent some time brainstorming earlier in the quarter about how we would dedicate 3% of our time. After several Google Forms questionnaires, we finally settled on a Habitat for Humanity for Greater Charlottesville build day, in nearby Lochlyn Hill.
The issue of affordable housing is near to our hearts. This summer, a study was conducted and found that Charlottesville was short 3,300 affordable housing units. The assessment found that there are 1,600 names on waiting lists for housing programs in our city, and those who make $45,000 or less per year spend more than half of their income on housing. When we heard that Habitat for Humanity was building 8 units in a mixed income development, we decided to dedicate our time to helping.

We arrived at the build site at 7:45am. After some intense sunscreen application, we received our job assignment. We aren’t highly skilled in construction, but there were quite a lot of us, and we’re young and strong, so we were assigned to transport and build scaffolding. While it might not sound that glamorous, it was an important job. There is no way the siding could be put on the house or the windows could be framed without it!
Throughout the day, we learned a little bit more about Habitat’s mission to bring people together to build homes, communities and hope. We met a future homeowner and many other volunteers. When we took a break for lunch, 3Qer Sara Henderson passed around cookies she had made to the whole crew. It was really encouraging to see everyone come together for such a great cause.
We all enjoyed the experience and are planning on returning for another build day in November.
We’ve found that volunteering together is a great way to build office spirit and am glad it’s part of 3Q’s employee initiatives. Below, I’ve compiled some thoughts from Charlottesville 3Qers about our day with Habitat for Humanity:

“The Habitat build was not only a great bonding experience for the Charlottesville team, but it was also a fun way to give back and show our appreciation for all the work that Habitat for Humanity does for our neighbors. I feel so lucky to work for a company that allows us to invest time into our community. I can’t wait for the next 3Q 3% outing!” – Melissa Collins

“I was fairly new to the company when I signed up for this Habitat build in June, and it was a great opportunity for me to work alongside my co-workers outside of the office environment! We were able to meet a diverse group of volunteers and work on a project that is important to our community. I think 3Q 3% is a great program to encourage community involvement and productive activities with co-workers.” – Sara Henderson

“Like many cities nationwide, Charlottesville is in the midst of an affordable housing crisis. Habitat for Humanity of Greater Charlottesville has become a necessity for many, providing safe, low-cost housing for working-class families. We at 3Q have a duty to better our community and working at Habitat is the least we can do to give back to our city.” – Dave Johnson

“This 3Q3% event was during my second week ever at 3Q, and I couldn’t be happier that I joined the Charlottesville office to volunteer with Habitat for Humanity! I got to know my team members better through working with members of our community, which was a really rewarding opportunity.” – Patricia O’Donnell

San Mateo

by Kristen Mingus
In October, I represented 3Q Digital’s San Mateo office at the Children’s Health Council Rocktoberfest!

3Q Digital has been giving back to the Children’s Health Council for almost 6 years, and this past month we were able to participate as a sponsor for the Annual CHC Rocktoberfest! CHC is an amazing organization dedicated to providing services and a custom learning environment for children, teens, and families struggling from all kinds of needs. The event was a hit, filled with donors, families, community representatives, auctions, speakers, delicious local food and drinks – and an amazing performance by the Cheeseballs! It was an honor to represent 3Q as a supporter of such a giving community.
